Application of soil moisture sensor

Soil moisture plays a vital role in irrigated fields as well as in botanical gardens. Because the nutrients in the soil provide food for the growth of plants. Providing water to the plants is also essential to changing the temperature of the plants. The temperature of plants can change with water through methods such as transpiration. Plants also develop better root systems when grown in moist soil. Extreme soil moisture levels can lead to anaerobic conditions that promote the growth of plants and soil pathogens. This article discusses the overview, principle of operation, and applications of soil moisture sensors.

What is a Soil Moisture Sensor?

A soil moisture sensor is a sensor used to measure the volumetric content of moisture in the soil. Because of the direct gravimetric dimension of soil moisture it is necessary to cull, dry and weigh samples. These sensors measure volumetric moisture content without directly resorting to other laws of the soil such as permittivity, electrical resistance, other interactions with neutrons, and a proxy for moisture content.

The calculated relationship between properties and soil moisture should be adjusted for ecological factors such as temperature, soil type or electrical conductivity, and may vary. Reflected microwave emissions are affected by soil moisture and are mainly used in agriculture and hydrological remote sensing. These sensors are typically used to check the volumetric water content, and another set of sensors calculates a new property of the water in the soil, called water potential. Commonly, these sensors are called soil water potential sensors and include plaster blocks and tensiometers.
