So you’ve bought a personal weather station! Now you have to figure out how and where to install it. Don’t take this step lightly, cheap mounts won’t withstand prolonged periods of severe weather conditions, and proper siting will make all the difference in getting readings comparable to nearby official weather stations.

Instructions for the location of the weather station

For weather station siting, we strongly recommend that you follow the National Weather Service guidelines. You may not be able to meet all the suggestions here, but try to get as close as possible and remember to keep the sensor within wireless range of the console.

Temperature/Humidity Sensor: Place on level ground, on a natural surface within radiation shielding at eye level (between 4’1″ and 6’7″ above ground). Ideally, the horizontal distance is at least twice the height of any nearby obstructions (e.g., 40 feet from a 20-foot tree) and away from any man-made heat sources (concrete, roofs, chimneys, rocks, metal fences), ETC. ).
Anemometer: Mounted at a height of 33 feet above the ground, ideally at a horizontal distance of 10 times the height of the nearest obstacle. If mounting the anemometer to the side of the mast rather than the top, the anemometer should be placed at least three diameters from the main mast (for example, 6 inches from a 2-inch diameter mast).
Rain gauges: CWOP recommends installing rain gauges 4-6 feet above the ground. Ideally, its horizontal distance should be at least four times the height of any nearby obstacles. Also, make sure the meter is level and in a location where splashes from the ground and other surfaces will not occur.
All-In-One Sensor Kit: If your site is equipped with an all-in-one sensor kit, it must be at the ideal height for the anemometer (33 feet) and temperature/humidity/rain sensors (4 -6 feet). The best option is somewhere in between, 10 feet or higher is recommended.

Weather Station Installation Ideas for Rural Areas

Since your home or business is in a rural area, you likely have plenty of room to place your station away from any buildings, so make the most of the land. You’re also less likely to abide by landowner deeds or homeowners association rules. An anemometer was placed on top of the 33-foot mast, and temperature and humidity sensors were placed below the mast at eye level. If you have an all-in-one station, you can use a shorter mast so your temperature and rainfall readings will be accurate.

What should be paid attention to when installing the weather station

Any weather station mounting solution you purchase should be made of steel or aluminum, as they are best able to withstand harsh weather conditions. Stay away from plastic stands as they are the least durable. If you plan to make your own brackets, using PVC pipe is a good option if you can’t use galvanized metal rods. Some people attach their weather stations to 4×4 wood posts – just remember to treat the wood with some kind of waterproof sealant to prevent rot.

Have a screwdriver, adjustable wrench, compass, and power drill ready. A bubble level is also useful so you can make sure your rain gauge is level. Many smartphones have a built-in compass and spirit level, or you can download an app to help.
